Sony PSP: Frustratingly Beautiful

Wipeout Pure

Publisher: Sony
Number of players: 1 to 8

Here's another classic from Sony that's been updated for the PSP launch. It was one of the flagship games for the launch of the first PlayStation, but has since taken a back seat to some newer titles that have come out since.

Wipeout is a futuristic race game that recalls classics like F-Zero and Extreme-G in many ways. At the controls of ultra-fast hovercrafts, you have to go down narrow but impressive-looking tracks while grabbing and using boosts and weapons scattered along your path. This new episode of the Wipeout saga is inspired by Wipeout XL and Wipeout 3, and adds a few new items in the form of heretofore-unseen race vehicles.

The game is basically traditional and without surprises, but stands out in the PSP catalog due to the quality of its programming and graphics. Wipeout Pure is surely one of the best-looking games - if not THE best-looking, in competition with Ridge Racer - currently available on the Sony portable console. With extraordinary fluidity despite the level of detail it displays, it's a real technological demo for the machine. It also has a very high-quality soundtrack, provided you use earphones (since the PSP's built-in speakers lack punch). Wipeout Pure also has a multiplayer mode where up to eight participants can compete at the same time in three different types of contests.
