The BBC has said that it will push five new HD channels live later this week. Come Wednesday, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBBC HD, and Cbeebies HD will be on air. These new channels don't require a subscription and BBC has said the pre-Christmas launch will allow viewers better access to their favourite shows over the holiday season.
"I am delighted that we’re able to launch our new HD channels in time for Christmas, when families gather together to enjoy some of the best TV from the BBC. This year, people will be able to watch even more of our programmes in brilliant quality," said Tony Hall, BBC Director-General.
FreeView HD and YouView users can find BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBBC HD, and Cbeebies HD on channels 105, 106, 107, 73, and 74, respectively. Freesat HD customers will see the new stations on channels 147, 148, 212, 607 and 608. Sky HD customers will see BBC Three HD on 115 or 210, BBC Four HD on 116 or 211, BBC New HD on 604, and CBBC HD and CBeebies HD on 613 or 633, and 614 or 624. Virgin Media customers can hit channels 163, 164, 604, 710, and 711.
According to the BBC, over 50 percent of homes in the UK are already HD-enabled. This is expected to grow to 80 percent by 2016.
