Intel faces possible Euro block on Pentium IIIs

The European Union may consider action against Intel's Pentium III processor due to the security implications of the chip's embedded processor serial number, or PSN.

A report presented to the EU's Scientific and Technological Options Assessment committee suggests that the PSN may violate European security protocols because it can be used for electronic surveillance.

The committee is presenting its findings to the European Parliament in connection with the development of surveillance technology and the risk of abuse of economic information.
