Yellow Dog Linux rolls over to PS3

Rocky Mountains (CO) - Just about a week after the launch of the PS3, Terra Soft Solutions has made available a version of Yellow Dog Linux for the console, adding a full third-party operating system to Sony’s supercomputer-like machine.

The official two sentence announcement from Terra Soft reads, "Six months of design, engineering, integration, and testing has culminated in the finest release from Terra Soft to date. Designed, not just assembled, Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 featuring E17 is immediately available via YDL.net "

Part of the installation is to split the user’s console into two separate entities - one to run the proprietary PS3 operating system, and one to run Yellow Dog Linux.

In the first half of December, Terra Soft is also expected to release a DVD that contains the installation file, which it will sell through its online store for $100. By the end of the year, there will also be public mirrors from which the software can be downloaded for free.

The YDL manual describes the application as a "full-featured Linux operating system" that adds the abilities of a home computer to the game console. Yellow Dog may just prove what Sony has been claiming over the past few months - that the PS3 is more of a computer than just a game box.
