Y2K predictions: Pollyanna or Cassandra?

As clocks around the world wind down to midnight, some experts are warning that optimistic predictions of an uneventful Y2K arrival may be premature.

The Meta Group says more errors than most people realize might still exist in computer software deemed Y2K-compliant. The information technology analysis firm said most companies have only tested about 20 percent of the updated code.

Doug Black of Data Integrity, a company that provides independent verification services to companies and government agencies, said his firm has found one error for every 10,000 lines of renovated code.

U.S. government officials acknowledge there will be some Y2K related problems, but insist they will be isolated and not catastrophic.
