Y2K bug makes e-shoppers pay twice

A Y2K software glitch has apparently caused some credit card and debit card verifications purchases to be recorded twice.

CyberCash, which makes verification software for e-commerce transactions, claims the scope of the problem is small, affecting only a small group of merchants who failed to implement updates released last spring to make their credit card verification systems Y2K compliant.

Officials said as many as 50 to 100 merchants are affected, but emphasized that the true number is unknown.

Major banks that issue credit cards are said to be watching the situation, including one on the East Coast that has reported only nine incidents so far.
