Y2K bug bites PC retailers

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Several California PC retailers are being sued for alleged unfair business practices related to the Year 2000 bug.

The class action suit claims that certain retailers are violating California's Unfair Business Practices Act by failing to tell consumers whether their product can recognize the date change from 1999 to 2000.

The defendants in the claim - Circuit City, Fry's Electronics Inc., The Good Guys Inc., CompUSA Inc., Office Depot Inc., Staples Inc. and OfficeMax - argue that the law doesn't cover "silence in connection with a retail sales transaction."

The defendants plan to file a formal response in Contra Costa County, California, by April 1.
