Olympus has announced its latest tiny addition to the digital storage media arena, the xD-Picture Card. The xD-Picture Card offers solid state technology in a dimension that is roughly one square inch high and wide (about U.S. postage-stamp size) by 2/3 inches deep. Jointly developed by Olympus and Fujifilm, the xD-Picture Card offers a variety of capacities at affordable prices. By the end of the summer, Olympus says it will release for retail sale a 16-mb card for $19.95 US, a 32mb card for $29.95 US, a 64-mb card for $49.95 US, and a 128-mb card for $109.95 US; Olympus also plans for year-end release a 256-mb card, as well as a 1Gb card in 2004. The xD-Picture Card will work with Olympus cameras that are being specially made to use these new cards, and as a further feature, Olympus is also making available adapters for the xD cards so that they can also be used with cameras which require Compact Flash.
