Are PC Gamers Too Good for Console Gamers?

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Controller vs. mouse and keyboard? Not a fair match.

With gaming technologies so similar these days, as games use the same engine technologies, it would seem like a logical step for different platforms to be able to play with each other online. After all, Macs and PCs have been harmoniously getting along with each other online. So what about consoles?

Microsoft controls what goes on its Xbox 360 platform, so through its Games for Windows initiative, one would assume that Microsoft at one point must have contemplated getting its console gamers online with PC gamers. According to VoodooPC founder and HP CTO Rahul Sood, Microsoft tested it and then canned it.

Why? Because console gamers were no match for PC gamers.

"There was a project that got killed at Microsoft. This project was designed to allow console gamers and PC gamers to interact and battle over a connected environment," Sood wrote on his personal blog. "I've heard from reliable sources that during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their 'console' controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse."

The results shouldn't be too surprising.

"The console players got destroyed every time," Sood added. "So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative. Is this why the project was killed Who knows, but I'd love to hear from anyone involved --- what happened?"

Sood then continued expressing his belief that cross platform play with the Xbox 360 would promoted the PC as a superior gaming platform, with a little nudge to developers to consider looking at making games for HP's newly acquired Palm webOS.

There is no reason to compare. Computers users have more control in a game(Affecting aim), much better maneuverability full stop(affecting crouching, jumping and both at the same time).

Consoles are not meant to run FPS or RTS games, since they need quite a bit of ingame-control which can't be provided.

They are perfect for jump'n run or racing games where the number of different inputs is very limited. Not even kinetic will change that.

Hmmm....
I play FPS, RTS, Simulation on PC but Hack&Slash, Racing, RPG, Jump&Run, Sport, Fighting on Console.
PC and Console are 2 different things for me.

They could sort it pretty easily I think, either allow for keyboard/mouse control on consoles or if they didnt want to go that far provide better controllers, something approaching a kb/mouse combo. Something similar to the fragfx for the ps3 only better :)

This is purely down to Keyboard and Mouse is much better than any controller.

I could of told them console players would get destroyed haha. The mouse gives much greater control of aim, also most gamers have a mouse with at least 2 buttons on the side, so already they have 4 buttons, and then they got whatever their left hand can press, which is a lot, with 5 fingers that's 5 keys at any one time, and loads within reach. The console gamers are limited to their 10 buttons (That's including the analog stick clicks). So it was never a fair fight.

Mate what are you on? It has nothing to do with the number of buttons available. It has EVERYTHING to do with the mouse being a superior pointing device to an analogue stick. If a mouse was not superior, all PC users (for every day tasks including games) would be using a "stick" device...

The fact that a mouse finds its way into EVERY PC for every daily tasks has everything to do with its ease of pointing, which is naturally adapted to games.

The console aiming stick is great for directing the action of a character (run this way, now run this other way) but is TERRIBLE for aiming on a 2D plane.

Game developers have done away with needing lots of buttons because of contextuality, meaning that the same button means different things (e.g. X is Fifa means pass or tackle on PS3). So its not about buttons but simply about the mouse for aiming.

Well i dont know about the uttons not making a differance but a mouse is so superiour to a thumb stick that its just laughable that these guys who are meant to know what they are talking about even tryed such a lopside initiative.
A standard set up offers so mush more control, never mind what would happen with a full on gaming set up with a multi button gaming mouse and keyboard.

Going from a PC to a console for FPS or other games where prescision is important is like going from a finely tuned sports car to a Citroen 2cv with a dirty windscreen

Ok apart from the research microsoft did it was obvious for a long time that a mouse is the best controller for many a game. What really confuses me ai why hasnt' the playing field been levelled by now especially as wirelss keyboards and mice are cheap enough. There may have been attempts at console based keyboards and mice but it was never done with conviction on the scale necessary for it to be taken up by the public. Often the biggest part of a consumer base needs something thats new (I know the irony of saying keyboard and mice is new)shoved into their hands and told it is what they need for them to take it on board. Not having the use of a mouse on a console is one of the main reasons if not the main reason I dont have a console.

Not necessarily. Your opinion is short sighted. The control inputs and game styles just differ between console and PC. I used to play PC exclusively and have only recently got a PS3 so I can play all the cool sports games and fighting games.

So sure, there are better FPS and RTS players on PC, but there are equally better FIFA players on console.

If Assassins Creed had multiplayer that might be interesting, because it sort of falls in the middle.

Why even bother commenting there is no comparison between the 2 platforms, thats why I hate playing console games, it's like you have a retarded brain and limbs, you cant move the action fast enough it's so frustrating.

The only way to compare is to just make a mouse and keyboard for the consoles then start bitch'n. Why on earth has this not been done? - I suppose you would get a uber elite console gamer)

PC GAMING ROCKS

Having just moved over to PS3 gaming, I was both shocked and surprised at the same time, because there are so many more games on PS3 (a lot of junk yes, but some real gems too, like Uncharted 2) - we PC gamers dont get anything like this. So many developers have abandoned the PC platform its not funny.

Even Relic is taking their next game to console! Rockstar didnt make RDR on PC, Crysis/Portal 2 on console... the list goes on. At the end of the day the platform with the money is going to get the best games.

I hate to admit it, but show me a good PC only game made in the last year? I can't think of anything!!

Diablo 3 when it eventually comes out is going to be unmatched, but other than Blizzard I dont know of any decent developers that are carrying the PC torch anymore.

@crus_russ i am awaiting the end of the month for sc2 (payday) and mafia 2 and formula1 2010 to come this year, i will be beta testing Trackmania 2 during the year with it's release planned for 2011 ... PC gaming is not dead, but it is admitedly "not where the money is".

A mouse and keyboard as some of the above mentioned is definately an advantage over a type of controller that requires the user to wait for the action inputted to show (like on a pad steer right and wait for the guy to turn in a shooter), this can easily be implimented on consoles if the developer so wishes, the hardware is allready there and purchasable.

What that will never circumvent is that a PC user can throw more money to make the experience smoother, and therefore gaining a better reaction time, also in theory with the 3d vision surround (not i finity thats just same screen space across many annoying bezels) a PC user could also gain more vision on the 3d world they are submersed in ...more sight will definately = more kills or earlier avoidance.

So in short PC gamers can allways trump a console not because of skill (allthough sometime it may be the case both ways round) but because we can technologically trump anyone on a fixed format device.

PC gaming is for nerds console gamers are for people who game for a part time leisure also the price?! cheapest gaming pc £500 and xbox cheapest=£100 Also little chance of xbox's lagging pc's have this problem due to background procceses so console is the better option and always has been.

@jamie_macdonald

you are right that PC will always have the *potential* to have a better experience, but over the years I have noticed that PC gamers (me included) have had to continually dump money into our rigs just to play the next game, usually because it is a console primed game and the porting is crap.

This is the crazy thing: On my PS3 if I play an old game (3 year old) it looks crummy, if I play one of the latest games (kane and lync 2, fifa world cup, red dead dedemption to name a few) they look light years better. So over time for the same fixed hardware games are getting BETTER, why? Because developers are having to write good code, plain and simple, to squeeze more out of the same hardware.

Say a GTX 280/480 kills a PS3's shitbox card by a factor of 10, how come PC games aren't 10 times cooler than PS3?

No money in PC gaming (except blizzard/wow) because of piracy.

If there was ever an argument to substantiate that "piracy hurts" an industry, it is the demise of quantity of quality PC games we used to see several years ago.

@cruss_russ ... i completely agree that the "bang for buck" on console is far greater ... that's due to the reason you state that they have to work harder in a limited environment to get the most out of it (a bit like evolution, hard circumstance = greater pressure = more efficiency/new functions)...

...As for the piracy i have to disagree, i often torrent games to try them out, if i like them i buy them ... and scince the digital download frenzy of an era we live in appeared i have purchased far more games as the cost in general has dropped quite dramatically,
The issue for the PC industry is the cost, lots of people can afford 100-200£ on a console and a game, but for a decent PC to play games on the cost is dramatically more, heck i spend 420£ on my graphics card alone! ...So i would say the piracy issue is promoting the games not damaging them, it makes sure (for me at least) that i do not make a purchase i would regret and make me more confident in buying games i like and know perform as they should.

I always prefer the console controler cuz its relaxing...i hate the way i crouch over my keyboard and mouse while i play (it hurts my back, but thats just me)

However no matter how u debate it the keyboard and mouse pwns the controller any day when it comes to control. I used to play an fps on my ps2 and i absolutely hated the game.

The keyboard has many more buttons that can be assigned to press than the controller, while the mouse....lets just say that the analog sticks on controllers suck a**.

Driving games are fine (personally i would actually prefer to plug a controller into my pc to play driving games) so i guess they can connect pc to x-box with driving games, maybe third person runners or games which do not require as delicate control as an FPS game does.
