The Windows Phone 7.5 Review, A Month-Long Experience

Bing Services: Local Scout, Music, Vision, Speech

Local Scout

Local Scout, WP7's guide to your current location, is completely integrated into WP7, although it requires location permission and a data connection to operate. When you click on an entry, such as a restaurant, you're provided with details that let you generate turn-by-turn navigation directions and call the business.

Music

Music provides an integrated music identification service that gives you the title, artist, and album of a particular song playing in the vicinity of the phone. This service requires a data connection.

Vision

Vision lets you scan codes and tags, provided that you have a data connection. It's also useful for helping translating text on flat images. Curved, open books don't work well.

The translation quality is similar to that of other automated services, which means that it often contains errors. Translations from European languages are generally of better quality than translations from Asian languages.

Speech

Speech is a simplified voice recognition system capable of calling, texting, searching, and opening applications. It can be accessed from the Vision icon or by holding down the home button. However, there's a slight difference between these two methods. Speech does not work without a data connection when it's used through Vision, but it does when you hold down the home button.

The most popular apps found on Android and iOS are also found on WP7, including Facebook, YouTube, Shazam, Slacker Radio, Twitter, Angry Birds, Netflix, Adobe Acrobat, GasBuddy, Air Hockey, and Skype.

    Adobe Reader?

To my knowledge there is not Skype yet on WP7, also a major point missed is the intergrated messaging system allowing you to switch seamlessy between SMS, Facebook chat and MSN. But otherwise nice review learnt a few things myself about Bing search!

I've got a WP7 phone. The only thing I want to see added now is VPN access. This is the one thing Apple & Android have over WP7

Never had a BSOD. The only issue I get(which is rare). Is that if I unlock the phone at the exact same time I get a Txt the screen can't be used. I have to lock and then unlock it to get it back
