Microsoft to Roll Out Ribbon Again for Windows 8

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

It's baaaaaaaaaack!

Microsoft's Ribbon UI design first debuted in Office 2007. Those accustomed to the traditional (and still oft-used) layout of Windows applications found the Ribbon UI of Office 2007 found that their productivity was often hampered – a troubling change for a productivity software suite.

Over the years since then, the Ribbon design idea has slowly made itself understandable to users though refinements and just plain pervasiveness as Microsoft continues to push it. The next big platform for even more Ribbon could be Windows 8.

According to Within Windows and WinSuperSite, Windows 8 will likely have a Ribbon interface for Windows Explorer, which is used for file management in the operating system. Ribbon in its current form in Windows 8 replacement the menu and toolbar. In the opinion of the authors, the change comes at the expense of screen real estate and attractiveness.

Several Ribbons are available depending on the directory or folder. Ones dedicated to images could have picture tools available on the Ribbon.

At this stage, it appears that the Ribbon UI for Windows Explorer in Windows 8 can be disabled – which is considerate for all those who are comfortable with the current system.

Oh God. I HATE that ribbon, mainly because Microsoft themselves have missed the point with it.

Look at Outlook 2010's ribbon - one tiny box of the Home ribbon is Quick Actions which contains no less than 6 buttons in it! De-clutter and streamline? I don't think so.

i think microsoft should make better-performance (dont repeat vista mistakes which was damn slow), n elegant interface.. but one more important thing is user-friendly (dont use that ribbon menu, its troublesome.. n dont make us have to upgrade extremely for windows 8)..

I actually love the Ribbon.

I use it in Office 2010, several other tools and also SharePoint (which uses the Ribbon in a web browser).

The ability to dynamically change the menu and interface based on your selection, along with the ability to change the ribbon design based on your window size is a great innovation.

For those who "hate the ribbon" and think it "hampers productivity".. the same things were said about the new Start Menu in Windows 95 (and then again in Vista .. and then again in Windows 7 ... )

If you can get over your "muscle memory" issues in my experience you soon find that your productivity is better and faster as a result.

I didn't have a problem with the change to ribbon. just remember all your full keyboard shortcuts!

Inserting an image from file? Alt-i-p-f etc.

It's nothing to do with muscle memory for me - I cannot FIND anything in Office so I do everything through context menus and dialogs. Plus the ribbon can be as cluttered as a traditional toolbar and menu system, so what was really the point?

Because it is more functional and flexible than a standard toolbar.
e.g. show new tabs and buttons depending on what object is selected. Dynamically resize with the window.

If you have a problem with ribbon bars being cluttered and poorly laid out then blame the applications which have designed their own ribbon button layout .. not the technology behind it.

Looks like I'll be giving Vista 2.0....er, Windows 8 a miss.

Half-assed cloud = Fail
Ribbon = Fail
Short release cycle = Fail

Microsoft is steadily making itself irrelevant in the tech world.

This will be the same as the transition from XP to Vista/7, getting over muscle memory and reflex.

My short use of the Ribbon interface I found it very neat and stylish.

I prefer shorter release cycles, helps keep things moving, and helps speed up people dropping older technologies like XP.

And cause a headache in any environment bigger than your gaming PC in the bedroom. Dozens of incompatible applications, $$$s worth of hardware and software upgrades, that apart from being incompatible with latest OS work absolutely fine.

does no one know how to right-click any more?

this menu is just useless, a good thing it can easily be disabled,
i didnt like the ribbon in office 2007 and dont like it now

it was quicker for me to actually right click an image and then image toolbar and click on what i wanted than go through the useless ribbon

with what windows is doing is trying to make it apeal to people that dont know what they are doing on computers, this is a pointless exercies and just anoys the rest of us

the only reason im sticking with windows is for my pc games and a couple windows programs i use otherwise i would have adopted linux long ago,

if anything linux is easier to use than windows and has way better help for its users
