Windows XP Death Clock Doesn't Work on XP

by - source: I-Programmer

The end isn't that near at all.

The end is approaching for Windows XP… in 2014. The already decade-old operating system is still the main base for much of the world's PCs, despite Microsoft's efforts to hold those users away from Internet Explorer 9 (though the latest Firefox and Chrome work just fine) and the other latest Microsoft software.

In its latest push, Microsoft has made and published "Windows XP End of Support Countdown Gadget" – essentially a desktop gadget with a countdown clock until the classic OS is no longer supported.

Microsoft gives it the following overview: "Looking to get off Windows XP? Use this handy gadget to count down the number of days until Windows XP End of Support (EOS) in 2014."

The desktop gadget, however, is only supported by Windows Vista and Windows 7, which makes it somewhat puzzling as such users have obviously eradicated Windows XP from that particular system.

Still, it's a good daily reminder of just how many days left until Windows XP is off the map. Download it from Microsoft here.

microsoft has a long history of really, really dumb ideas. some are very famous, like "Keyboard error/not found, press F1 to proceed" some are less famous but not any the less annoying, like -and being in 2011 this is astonishing - BSODs for which neither the process nor the reason for failing are immediately and clearly identified. severe errors in the syslog without even the option of being advised of them unless you explicitly open up the event viewer and search for them. errors on a hard disk? well, with *several* ways of letting you know *clearly* which drive of the several mounted failed (drive letter, drive label, disk serial number, mount point where applicable, etc, etc) you get: "\Device\Harddisk4\DR4" and because you don't get any warning of such errors being in the even log, you might find out later, at a time when different drives have been mounted on different ports/channels so that Harddisk4\DR4 may be a completely different drive. like ibm before it, microsoft is a gigantic beast that evolves and changes direction slowly (but note that ibm makes excellent software and operating systems)

"Keyboard error/not found, press F1 to proceed". I didn't know MS had anything to do with old BIOS ROMs of old motherboards. Interesting.

That error message isn't Microsucks fault, it is left over from CP/M
