Windows 7 RC Update to Shoot Blanks Soon
Some of us are happily running Windows 7 RC now, which is provided to the public for free in exchange of testing feedback. Now, it’s time for testing.
Starting May 12, Microsoft will begin testing the automatic update functionality of Windows 7 by rolling out ‘sterile’ updates that will do nothing to alter the operating system.
“We need to verify the update infrastructure to ensure that when we need to release real updates, the process will run smoothly. There will be at most 10 updates, and as before, they will not deliver any new features or fixes,” read an update on TechNet.
Most of the updates will be automatic, but some will require specific user action to install.
“One of the updates will test a new update notification feature that provides detailed information about available updates that need to be installed manually. Windows 7 RC users will be prompted to install this update and provided more information about this feature –it will not install automatically,” the post continued.
So for those of you now running Windows 7 RC, has it been a smooth experience?

A surprisingly smooth. Installed over Vista took a couple hours to move around my files. Nn BSOD (As Yet)
After using Windows 7 RC for the past couple of weeks at home and office I can honestly say it's really really good. I now hate having to go back to a Vista machine or using a Vista laptop knowing that if it had windows 7 it would be running faster and smoother. No problems with the OS as yet and its all the little improvements over Vista that make it a clear winner!
Just wish they had got it right first time with Vista first!
@inquisitor03
You have seen speed improvements? I haven't at least not noticeable...
In my case this RC version is a far cry from the beta release I had installed previously and is more akin to a re-installation of Vista!
Problems encounterd so far is a complete freeze up of the start button and a reluctance to access web pages upon first opening the browser.
The whole system feels sluggish compared to before and clicking an Icon on the desktop or taskbar sometimes does not actavate the relevent program immediately, as if the OS has forgotten the path and is in a quandary as to what to do next.
ven logging on at Tom's has it's problem where the log on screen remains frozen on screen until the mouse is clicked on a blank area of screen.
At this momment in time I would say Vista is a better bet than continuing testing RC, or perhaps re-installing Beta for it's much smoother ride, in fact a near perfect operating system.
Whatever you've added Microsoft, kindly see your way clear to removing it forthwith, it's a bad move.

Now you see up above a double post, this was cause by being asked to log on once again afer already being logged on else it would be an annon post apparently.
A clear browser problem.
@eddieseven
are you using IE?
windows 7 rc, runs sweet reminds me of how windows 2k used to run.
I've found to minor issues.
1: when comming out of stand by, I have to disable and enable my wireless (not all the time mind you) which takes a whole of 2 seconds.
2: Chrome appears to have intermitent errors, though firefox hasn't given me a single issue.
3: 1 program out of the 25 i've installed so far didn't work. Overall pretty good for an RC.
4. I find when I open the start menu or control panel, there is a lag on showing icons which certainly shouldn't happen, it's not all the time, it's like they aren't being cached correctly.
I've really enjoyed this OS so far, the install was quick, I like the new Aero, I like that i can easily set the Music and Video locations to multiple locations, primarily on another disk.
I'd give it a thumbs up so far.
Playing Empire Total War on Windows 7 (Beta and RC) has shown huge performance benefits. Smoother, no stuttering, and no crashing!!
Why anyone would PAY to run anything less that a free copy of Windows 7 RC is beyond me...
@eddieseven.
I'm feeling the slowdown, too! Even my experience index was reduced, somewhat bizzarely?
The beta was simply amazing. I didn't have one BSOD, it ran faster than vista, and looked pretty to boot. I can't help but feel that the RC is a step backwards, feeling significantly slower, with multitasking putting a lot more strain on my processor.
Oh well, time to upgrade my PC, i guess...
I upgraded to Win7RC and havn't noticed a difference from the beta, other than that it's cleaner and works better than before.
I initially noticed a little graphical lag when opening WLM windows and such, but after about a day that died away and the system is so responsive now that it blows the beta and Vista out of the water.
Windows 7 RC is excellent, but, so was the beta. But, anyone who was expecting to be blown away by the RC was expecting too much.
