Windows Server 2003 and Opteron - IDF Chat
In the all the hullabaloo over what Athlon64 is and isn't, the most important event for AMD is being overlooked. It is the release of Microsoft's 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Server 2003 family of products in April. Opteron, Windows Server 2003, and various Itanium releases will all crowd the market at the same time. AMD is hoping to ride on the back of Microsoft on the server side, but don't bet the farm on it because, Microsoft still has to win over enterprise customers who are not that enthusiastic about porting over their NT code.
On the other side of the coin, Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition, the 64-bit version running on Itanium, is going to be upgraded to the April 24 release of the full version.
Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition customers will receive a no-charge upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition when it is available. According to Microsoft.
It's what they call an inflexion point in the server market for Itanium and Opteron. Worth keeping an eye out for, and the subject of some debate at IDF. If only servers were more accessible than desktops......hmmm.
