Morton at Icrontic has a nice piece about Windows PE (pre-installation environment), or Windows XP-on-a-CD. Windows PE is a bootable CD that supports all mass-storage and networking drivers contained on the Windows XP Professional CD. You do need to reboot after 24 hours, which is one of the official limitations, but a small footprint Windows XP has some interesting possibilities, as the article explains. Check it out
