Congrats, Windows, You are a Quarter Century Old
This is vintage Windows along with some vintage Ballmer.

Believe it or not, Windows has been with us for more than a quarter century now, since being released on November 20th, 1985. While it may not have been with you for 25 years, there's no doubt that Microsoft's operating system has radically affected and influenced the computing world that we're in today.
It was announced by Bill Gates in New York City in grand fashion. Sure, it wasn't exactly pretty for many years, and it was originally supposed to be called "Interface Manager," but today it's still Windows and it stands on its own as the most popular piece of software on the planet.
Many of us at that time may have stuck with DOS (at least until Windows 3.1 rolled along, in my case – though DOS was still required, of course), but eventually PCs were gradually moved from the command line interface to the graphical styles of Windows.
Microsoft has come a long way to reach today's Windows 7. Let's have a look back at how things were in the initial release:
- Corvette ZR1 PC Casemod Can Still Drive Around
- Lenovo's $10,000 Laptop That You Can't Have
- This Concrete PC Case is a Work of Art
- The Phone Packing Windows XP is Finally on Sale
- Qualcomm Details the Next-Gen Snapdragons
- Adobe to Fix Flash Battery Life Issue
- Super Talent Shipping Dual-Interface SSD
- 3DMark 11 ''Ships'' This Month
- Deals for November 19: Sony LCD Projector $449
- Thermaltake Chassis Has Top-Mounted HDD Dock
- Maingear Intros New Mid-range Gaming Laptops
- Live from Acer's New York City Tablet Event
- Digital Storm Rig Clocks 4.6 GHz at 0ºC
- Try Google Chrome to Win $500 Newegg Gift Card
- Elder Scrolls 5 May Be a Direct Sequel to Oblivion
- Nvidia Points Finger at AMD's Image Quality Cheat
- MMOG on Screen Larger Than Football Field
- TRENDnet's 500 Mbps Powerline Networking Kit

"except in Nebraska!"
That commercial is so embarrassing I feel ashamed by just watching it...
Happy 25st anniversary! May there be 25 more years of slow booting, crash prone and generally annoying Windows releases!
Windows 7 was a step in the right direction, but it's not there yet. Every time I boot up Ubuntu or any other Linux distro I've ever used, I'm amazed by the booting speed, the lack of freezes/crashes and the general ease of use. If only you could properly game on Linux without needing the travesty that is Wine (some games don't work at all, those that do take ages to get working and when they work, they're full of bugs and FPS is terrible).
Even Mac is faster and more stable, but their hardware restriction makes it a tough sell...
I'm not a Windows basher, but Windows simply has some fundamental flaws. You can't blame Windows for the rampant viruses, because that's a result of being the biggest, not of poor security (it was a few years ago, but things improved greatly). However, the slow speed, ugly UI and frequent freezes and crashes are a Windows issue...

I've not had Windows crash on me in 3 years, and the few lock-ups have only been temporary when I've pushed ageing hardware a little too hard by running too many things at once.
Boot times suck though, and Windows rot does my head in.
Windows has never truly failed on me. Agreed xp wasn't the greatest, and vista wasn't the fastest. But now 7 came along I love it. What you say about it crashing a lot(major exagguration mine hasn't crashed in months) is due to the fact that it works with everything. Al other operating systems are limited in some way by other the compatible hardware or software. This is Windows' strength sadly it also leads to conflicts and crashes and is thus their weakness.

I've had far more crashes using my girlfriend's Mac than my W7 PC. Can't remember the last time it froze or crashed. It may slow down at times but let's face it, my 5yr old mechanical boot disk is more to blame than windows!

I second this, i have had almost zero problems with my Windows 7 machine; my auntie and uncle who i built a windows 7 computer for also love Windows 7 and they are pretty technophobic. But as soon as i go over to my friends house who has almost everything by Apple, trying to load video's on Youtube caused it to crash 5 consecutive times in about 5 minutes (i would have given up after the second try but my friend continued a further 3 times in an attempt to save some sort of face, even though i wasn't judging).
ugly UI
Thats a subjective issue, i personally think Windows 7 is beautiful. I can't say much for Linux as i've never used it so i won't comment. Snow Leopard is incredibly ugly in my opinion, the only 'nice' thing about it is those backgrounds they have. But the general windows and buttons are a horrible grey colour that kinda depresses me. Its a good job it boots quick and is fairly snappy. Anyway, this is just an opinion; i'm not bashing Apple but merely giving my views. I'm sure Lion will have some UI updates to help it along.
This thread is almost asking for apple/linux fanbois and geeks "above their station" to rip into MS.....

...All i can say to windows is thanks for bringing computing into the right direction (ease of use and nice presentation). i know all the geeky people say it's a pile of dogs doo, but personally it got me where i am today, and has been infinately usefully to me, my life and my friends & family over the years, have grown up being able to know and do more purely because of this "windows".
Thx for all the fun, i hope for many more years ...and at the peeps above saying windows7 is a "step in the right direction" ... ALL of windows have been that and allways will be, vista allthough hated (was fine for me, because i got new hardware with it) is responsible for the features you enjoy now in win7, no pain no gain eh? (now grow up?).
Thx again
