Microsoft's Concept All-in-One PC for Windows 8

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

This is Microsoft's ideal mainstream PC that will take advantage of what Windows 8 will offer.

Aside from peripherals and game consoles, Microsoft doesn't design hardware – at least not complete PCs. But found in the leaks of Windows 8 is a concept design of an all-in-one PC that Microsoft figures would take advantage of the new OS features.

Notably is the multi-touch screen that's able to resolve at least five different points and the mandatory DirectX GPU for HD video. The all-in-one would also pack things that machines don't have these days, like proximity sensors (for automatic sleep and wake), light sensors (for automatic brightening and dimming).

iMac clone is the first thing that jumps to mind. And what's worse, it's a clone that's uglier than the original. Never a good idea. MS has been looking to Apple a lot for inspiration lately, and that's a bad idea. Windows is different (and better imo) than Apple. Keep it that way.

An Apple inspired MS PC is like Obama joining the Tea Party Movement. It's not going to work...

And personally, I hate all in ones. They are hard to upgrade, don't pack high end graphics,... They're limited in just about every way. But then again, for the average user this seems perfect.

Unfortunutely that's what they look like they are going to cater for.

"...iMac clone is the first thing that jumps to mind"

Stop it. There has been a whole LOAD of all in one pcs over the years. Apple doesn't make everything first.

Steve Ballmer: I present the new iPC including a 9500GT and Core2Duo just starting at 2000$ US. We are totally not ripping off Apple's iMac and making it look uglier.

Microsoft: Think developers.

On a side note Windows 8? Why 7 is great.

You can't really make it any more minimalist than an iMac. Their 'design' philosophy is basically to shrinkwrap the thing in a small a box of polished aluminium and glass frontage as possible, personally I call that laziness....

The problem is that everyone has been convinved that this is the only way something can be 'well designed' the bigger problem is that competitors are now stuck in a mode of thinking where they start with an iMac and add fugly bits on so they dont get sued....

Q1) What took them so long
Q2) Why do they think that this would work
