MSFT: Windows 7 is Fastest Selling OS of All Time

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

This probably means that it sold faster than Windows Vista.

Microsoft's very proud of its latest operating system Windows 7, as it seems that the general public likes this one far more than its predecessor. In fact, the company boasts that this Windows platform is flying off the shelves faster than any other operating system.

Fast Company quotes Craig Beilinson, the Director of Marketing for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, as saying, "Windows 7 is by far the fastest selling Operating System in history."

This isn't the first time that Microsoft has boasted about the sales of Windows 7. Shortly after release, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer characterized Windows 7 sales as "fantastic."

"Since launch, we've already sold twice as many units of Windows 7 than any other operating system we've ever launched in a comparable time," Ballmer said in an earlier report.

Sadly, Microsoft still isn't sharing hard sales numbers with any of us yet, but given the growing proliferation of computer users today, (which means that there are more computer users than ever), it's not hard to believe that the latest Windows is selling faster, to more users, than previous releases.

Windows is one of the few pieces of software I can actually appreciate why people pirate, the cost is rediculously high for the relatively small upgrade you're receiving.

I got the preorder copy as £40 is a MUCH more reasonable value then the full and extortionate rrp. They're relying on people needing to upgrade and so forcing them into spending a ton on it due to lack of options.

Most of what this article really says is that everyone wanted to get rid of Vista. Effective strategy Microsoft...release utter rubbish, then release something that is pretty decent and watch your sales numbers rocket. But did you stop making money hand over fist when you released Vista...no, bc you forced it on everyone. I have 7, XP, Vista, and OS X 10.6.2 and 10.5.8...Microsoft made a decent OS, but they should have been there a looooong time ago and shouldn't have ever released Vista to their customers.

I can't help but wonder, (actually, I'm pretty sure they will have done), if Microsoft have counted those users who installed the Win 7 RC and then had to buy a licensed version twice.

The vast majority of people I know hwo are running Win 7 are doing so because they installed the RC and stuck with it after the trial was over. Of all my computer using contact only 4 willingly upgraded to 7. The common opinion seems to be "We'll wait for the 1st service pack".

When Microsoft make grand statements about 'fastest selling OS of all time' then won't back it up with quantifiable figures I have to put it down to Balmer talking out his ass again.

I hate people who talk about expensive prices of Microsoft software. If it really was "too expensive" then no-one would buy it! That is simple Economics (as simple as it gets, supply and demand).

Microsoft are the largest, most successful software company in the world for a very good reason .. no-one else can do it better (otherwise THEY would be the largest in the world!).

What about research costs? Literally billions of dollars have been spent in R&R, developer costs, testing, tweaking, language translation (how many languages is Windows and Office available in??).

And no-one ever seems to consider how much money it costs in after-sales support. Do you have any idea how much money Microsoft burns employing pre-sales, post-sales and support staff worldwide? for YEARS ... for free! And how about all the patches, service packs, freebies and updates you get?? How about free Firewall, Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware packages (with their own support staff and worldwide incident centres).

How about you trying running a multi-billion dollar company worldwide, find out how easy it is, and THEN see if you still want to criticise their pricing strategy!

*rant over* ...

And to Alex ...

Only a complete idiot, or a hermit, could think that any OS could sell faster than a Microsoft OS. They have a rediculously large market share.

If every single Mac user worldwide had purchased their OS in the last 6 months... Windows 7 would STILL have sold more copies in that time!

Who else could possibly achieve sales of that magnitude than Microsoft?

I'm with the doubters.

If you took away the people who didn't know (or care) what licence came with their new computer, the numbers would be a much fairer measure of how much people care about what is basically another success for glossy marketing.
