White LEDs to replace light bulbs
Shuji Nakamura, a leader in LED and laser research, said in his keynote address to the International Electron Devices Meeting that new white LEDs, once considered the holy grail of semiconductor optoelectronic engineers, will replace incandescent bulbs in many applications. The lights should, he says, last ten to 50 times longer than the standard incandescent bulbs, put out far less heat and require less energy. Nakamura said, "With the advance of solid-state semiconductor materials, all electronics are now highly reliable circuits. Only light sources are still made of an old traditional technology."
