I’ve been listening to the Hitman : Blood Money soundtrack whilst working, and every now and then I get this insatiable urge to go and play the game... Naturally enough, of course, as the music is so tied into the gameplay ; and while there is not yet a John Williams of video game soundtracks Jesper Kyd is a friggen genius and about as close as we’ve got.
For me, Hitman : Blood Money is one of the truly memorable video games out of all that I’ve ever played. I’ve played an awful lot of video games mind, and there are very few on that list of "truly memorable." So, what makes a game truly memorable ? Well, for me it’s a game to which I associate things besides just the gameplay - it’s a game which I was so engrossed with at the time that playing that the game now reminds me of things in the real world that I was doing at the time, and vice versa.
For example, Half-Life counts as a game into which I became, for wont of a better description, emotionally attached to. Every time I listen to Pink Floyd’s "Division Bell" album I think of Half-Life. Why ? Because I listened to that album a lot whilst playing the game. What music was I listening to whilst playing Half-Life 2 ? I can’t really recall, because while it was a good game I never got that into it.
