The Best RTS?
The RTS genre is nearly ten years old. It has come a long way since Dune 2 - developed by Westwood - which was the first real founder of the genre. It's odd to think that the best RTS games around at the moment are Command and Conquer: Generals and Warcraft III, the latest output of two cult series in the genre.
Moreover, the Microsoft Age of Empire saga is as popular as ever and, apart from Focus games like Cossacks, American Conquest and Blitzkrieg, the RTS market has had the same players and development studios for ten years. This is not surprising as Warcraft III, and The Frozen Throne expansion, are really beautifully made. The 3D graphics are superb and the ergonomics perfect. Indeed, this game has not aged a bit over the last year.
If there is anything to criticize, it is that the zoom does not sometimes pan enough to give a view of the entire battlefield. But that's a small matter. The game is lovely, exciting to play solo and almost endless in multiplayer mode. What more could you want?
