Remember the Canadian man who used his phone as a modem, racked up a $80,000 bill and prompted such reader comments as,

“The fact that these people can dress themselves and are free citizens of any country amazes me.”

“How ? How do some people think like this ? It defies belief !”

Well, some poor other sod has gone has gone and done it, only this time, it’s one of our own.

29-year-old factory worker, Ian Simpson, spoke exclusively to the Mirror about the Vodafone bill he recently received amounting to £27,000.

Similar to the last story, Simpson used his phone as a modem and didn’t realise his fifty odd quid a month price plan didn’t cover downloads. Whoops.

Mr Simpson told the Mirror that he “laughed out loud” when he saw the figure and hopes that efforts to pay off the debt don’t bankrupt him.

He also blames Vodafone for not telling him he was racking up such a high bill. The company said that the intensity of Ian’s downloads meant that by the time the system flagged it as out of the ordinary, Simpson had already clocked up a huge bill.

Last time I was in Japan (2005) You could get 256Kb wireless internet on your mobile, for ~£20/month flat rate, with about 98% coverage in a country that has more mountains than Wales.

Telecoms are a rip-off in the UK. In Kenya people living in houses made of mud can afford a mobile phone on contract.
