Vizio Overtakes Sony for LCD TV Sales

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Statistics from iSuppli this week indicated that Vizio, a company popular for mainstream LCD TV panels in the U.S., surpassed Sony in terms of LCD TV sales for the first quarter of 2009.

Vizio TVs are manufactured by Taiwanese OEM Amtran Technology. LCD TVs sold by Vizio, while popular, aren't particularly known for superior image quality or build quality, but rather for affordability and value for the money. Despite not being favored by more serious home theater enthusiasts, Vizio has done very well for itself.

"Vizio's success in the fourth quarter was partly due to increasing brand recognition, courtesy of the company's strong marketing efforts and retail strategy," said iSuppli analyst Riddhi Patel.

Other more prominent companies in the flat panel market have been hurt significantly from hard economic times and changing buying patterns from consumers. Most recently, Pioneer, a legend in plasma displays, decided that it would completely withdraw from making plasmas. Vizio too, indicated that it would stop selling plasma displays.

Do you own a TV from Vizio? What do you think of the quality of your LCD panel? Do you feel you got what you paid for?

I purchased a Vizio tv at circuit city about a year ago. I have never been so displeased with a tv. The black levels suck cant reproduce anything real. Picture is really washed out in bright movies or shows. I purchased this tv because of the price now it sits a closet so if i ever have a tv in my house i can use it as a back up. I do not suggest this product to anyone. Save a couple buck more and get a real tv from samsung or sony. However if you really care for picture quality buy a PLASMA. I own a Pioneer Elite 53" i never owned a tv with such depth in color and the blacks are to die for.
