Vienna publishes study on migration to Linux

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The city of Vienna has published the results of a study of a possible migration of large parts of its IT equipment from Windows to Linux.

According to the document published on the IT departmet’s website, about 7500 of the 16,000 city workstations could run Linux software. The remaining 8500 PCs required Windows as foundation for applications such as Microsoft Office.

Only 4800 of those 7500 computers however apparently are suited to be moved completely to a Linux environment. 2700 systems would keep Windows as an operating sytem and use OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office in the future, the city concluded.
