Via plans sub-$200 PCs

The Taiwanese chipmaker and Intel rival, Via Technologies, has announced plans to help deliver PC-like systems selling for $199 and less. Via will work with OEMs to develop systems, using Via microprocessors and chip sets, that fall between full-function PCs and low-cost information appliances delivering, "A new entry-level platform focused on delivering a powerful Internet experience and computing experience for everyone."

Central to Via's effort is the Cyrix III processor and Apollo PM601 chip set. Additional low-cost systems are in the works, including systems built around Via's upcoming processor, "Matthew." More details will be forthcoming at the Via Technology Forum September 28 in Taipei.
