Verizon launches new mobile TV service
New York (NY) - Verizon announced that it has launched a new mobile TV service, bringing 24-hour programming of eight channels. It’s the first attempt to provide a TV-like experience on a cell phone.
Most mobile video services offer programming on an "on demand" basis, allowing users to select from a limited collection of videos from various TV networks and exclusive mobile channels. The new Vcast service, delivered by MediaFlo, includes a live feed of MTV. This makes the Viacom-owned network the first to simulcast its TV programming 24/7 to a mobile platform.
The other channels included are CBS, NBC, ESPN, Fox, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central. These channels will be filled with a different programming schedule than their TV counterparts.
Unlike most other new Vcast services, the live TV channels will cost users an additional fee. In addition to the monthly $15 charge for access to Vcast, the MediaFlo service will cost an extra $10 per month.
