US tech visa bill passed

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The bill increasing the number of US visas for high-tech workers has passed the house with only one "no" vote. Having previously prevailed 96 to 1 in the Senate, the number of tech workers allowed six-year work visas appears certain to be increased to 200,000 annually for the next three years. Previous Democratic Party attempts to bind other immigration issues to the bill had threatened to derail the legislation. There is still a chance that President Clinton will veto the bill if an amnesty bill for undocumented Central American and Caribbean immigrants is not passed, but neither party wants the blame for killing the measure lobbied for so earnestly by the tech sector. Tech businesses have reportedly doubled political contributions in the last two years.
