UN confers about the net

The United Nations is talking officially this week about using the Internet to bring economic progress to technologically undeveloped parts of the world. The issues to be covered include privacy, the protection of intellectual property and the provision of content in languages other than English. The problem of simple access, however, is at the top of the agenda for those who want to see some of the productivity gains the Internet has delivered to developed nations accrue to the rest of the globe. Today, according to a UN study released last month, there are more Websites hosted in New York than in Africa, and more in Finland than Latin America and the Caribbean.
