Gigabyte Mobo Can Feed (or Fry) CPU With 1500W
Ever feel like Captain Kirk, always asking for more power? This one's got the power.
Earlier this month, Gigabyte debuted its flagship motherboard, the X58-based UD9. At the time, the company talked up its "Unlocked Power" with its full 24 power phases, dual power switching, and 4-way graphics support for both SLI and CrossFireX – but at Computex, Gigabyte revealed a new feature of the board that it boasted was a secret up until today.
That feature is the ability to feed your CPU with up to 1,500W, which is a mighty big number for those who either want to fry processors or hit new records in extreme overclocking. Check out the video below.
Gigabyte also detailed a couple new overclocking features, both of which make things more convenient than ever. The first feature is called HotKey OC, which allows the user to switch on the fly between different bus speeds, multipliers and voltages at the press of a button. This could be handy for changing between CPU and GPU limited applications, or times when you just want to dial down the power to save some green.
The final new feature demonstrated was Cloud OC, which is a bit of a misnomer. Some of the Gigabyte motherboards have a basic web server so that you can log in from another computer or mobile device, such as your smartphone, and you can tweak your overclocking settings externally. This will be useful when you're running a full-screen app and you don't want to quit just to change a few things to make them run better.
