For the first time in U.S. history, a court is providing general access to most trial materials in a criminal case via its website. The U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Virgina on 31 July released 1202 exhibits presented in the trial of U.S. vs. Zacarias Moussaoui. All materials are available for download. A registration is not required.

The collection includes hundreds of documents, images, video clips that describe the prosecution and defense cases. According to the Court, the exhibits are organized by the party that sought their admission, by the phase of the trial in which they were introduced, and by exhibit number. Seven exhibits presented during the trial remain "classified or otherwise under seal."

Moussaoui is still the only person that has been tried by the U.S. government surrounding the events on 11 September 2001. While he was already imprisoned on the day the terror attacks occurred, prosecutors alleged that Moussaoui could have prevented the attacks. He was sentenced to life in prison in May of this year.
