Transmeta and Advanced Micro Devices are on the verge of a patent trade that will help both compete against Intel. Sources quoted by ZDNet reporters reportedly say that Transmeta chips will hit the 1GHz mark early next year, about the same time that Intel mobile chips do the same. Transmeta reportedly wants AMD's Lightning Data Transfer technology, a high-speed processor interconnect technology that will increase bandwidth by a factor of twenty and will show up in future Athlon chip sets. Transmeta, having recently announced a deal with Sony, has revealed in its S-1 filing in preparation for going public, that it also is talking with IBM and Toshiba. In a related story, Intel has released the most details to date on its IA-64 architecture.
