Last week, Transmeta Corp. lost the enthusiasm of three major computer makers in regards to notebook projects that would have used the Crusoe microprocessor. Even as IBM, Compaq Computer Corp., and Toshiba America waffled in their support for the chip, Transmeta was going public. Having suffered several days of skeptical press, the company orchestrated extremely effective countermeasures, filling the technical press with news of other Transmeta design wins.
These wins include a US Army contract, also pursued by Intel and Via, for wearable PCs that could eventually control weapons, communication and information management systems for soldiers. Transmeta also announced new deals with Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC, Sony and Casio.
