Transmeta-based servers emerge

RLX Technologies, Rebel.com and two server start-ups, FiberCycle and Amphus, believe that server customers care enough about power consumption, heat and space issues to turn from Intel Corp. and Sun Microsystems chips and use Transmeta CPUs originally designed for notebook PCs. If claims are true that the Crusoe can deliver the same performance using a quarter of the standard power, developers believe there will be a market for the new category of server. Tests are currently underway to determine if the chip can deliver.
