Transitive hardware virtualization to support SGI's Itanium 2 systems
Transitive today said that it is expanding the reach of its QuickTransit hardware virtualization software on SGI computers. SGI currently ships QuickTransit on its Silicon Graphics Prism visualization system and will include the software on its deskside and Altix high-end server platforms, based on Intel’s Itanium 2 processor, as well. The software enables users to run applications compiled for MIPS processors and the IRIX operating system on Itanium 2, "without loss in functionality or performance," Transitive claims.
Transitive launched its software solution in 2004 and recently was rumored to be a foundation for Apple’s strategy to move to Intel-based computers beginning in June of next year. QuickTransit would Apple’s customers to use an Intel-based platform to continue to run PowerPC-compiled applications. (THG)
