Socket 7 Performance Of The Latest 3D Accelerators

NVIDIA has put a huge amount of work into 3DNow!-optimization of TNT and TNT2-drivers, to show that their products can compete against the excellent 3DNow!-performance of the 3Dfx Voodoo-products. We have put this claim to the test to stumble across a significant amount of nasty issues with Socket7-platforms. NVIDIA's current 0182b-drivers for TNT2 do indeed perform very well with K6-2 and K6-3, but so far you cannot use them on Socket7-boards with ALi-chipset. At the same time it turned out that a serious amount of Socket7-boards is unable to run K6-3 with a modern 3D-accelerator as Voodoo3 or TNT2 due to power supply issues. Brent will post a comprehensive article about our findings this week.

Epilogue

After leaving San Francisco yesterday, I have now arrived in Taipei/Taiwan, where Computex will start tomorrow. Unfortunately the weather is as bad as it was last year at Computex, but the food, the scenery and the people here are still as enjoyable as ever. If there's anything worth reporting to you I will do so right away, otherwise I'll work on the above mentioned articles and more. I hope that you forgive me that I was a changed and maybe a bit negative person in the last two months. The hard times are over now and my team as well as my readers have all reasons to look forward into a exciting and challenging new future. The force will be with us!
