Brian's Comments
Brian's Comments
I sent the posting I made on Saturday to Brian Hook as well, and he replied to me in a pretty long email. I do not agree with him on all what he said, but I finally realized that he was damn right when he strongly criticized that my Saturday-posting was only pouring oil into the fire, rather than calming things down. He even wrote two paragraphs, to show me how the posting should have been. I did not agree with him at the time when I received the mail, but finally I have understood that he's right. That's what he suggested:
"It has become apparent to me that my methodology for Q3TEST scores may not be entirely reliable, as such they should not be accepted as absolutely valid data. I believe that they still show the relative strengths of various accelerators, however as others have pointed, there are some flaws to the techniques.
On another matter, I apologize to Brian Hook and any others that may have taken offense at my earlier comments. I handled things unprofessionally and take full responsibility for the tone of my earlier writings, and will attempt to make things better."
I Am Declaring One-sided Cease-fire
As a result I will take down any kind of flaming towards any individual or website. I promise here and now, that I will not ever react to any kind of 'anti-Tom' postings or emails anymore, I won't even bother taking the slightest offence to it. If people like to make nasty comments about my work, and me, if they try to make me look bad, biased or paid-off, then they will have to collect the material for it by themselves from now on. I won't make it easy for them by supplying any material for bad-mouthing me by myself anymore. I apologize to all my readers who feel that their time has been wasted by this stupid war-campaign, I apologize to Brian Hook for taking too much time until I finally got the message and I even apologize to all the websites who hate and despise me, for making nasty comments about them. I have neither got the time nor the slightest desire to go on fighting over a topic that most of you cannot even remember anymore, "is TNT2 indeed better than Voodoo3'.
I will from now on only focus on supplying you with the best and most thorough analysis of hardware components for PCs, just as I used to do in the good old days. I am old enough to be able to control my temper, and may the mails, news groups postings and websites be as ridiculous as they want, I won't get upset about it anymore.
John Carmack's Comments About 3D-Chips
My last word about the TNT2 vs. Voodoo3 issue comes not from me but from John Carmack, maybe you believe him more than you believe me (from GameCenter.Com ):

GC: Who makes the fastest 3D card today? J. C.: The fastest 3D card today is the [RIVA] TNT 2. I don't think anybody will even question that. You'd be hard-pressed to find an ATI or a 3dfx engineer who, if you really got them into a corner, wouldn't admit that. GC: What do you think of the Voodoo 3? J. C.: It's unfortunate that 3dfx supports only 16 bit color - which is a pretty significant limitation. I have a harder time recommending a Voodoo 3 to people. It does have the highest texel rate - of anything right now, even the TNT 2 - in optimal conditions. But you have to really focus a benchmark to make that come out on top when there are these significant issues, like 24 bit color, which it just doesn't support; and then there are these annoying things like 256 [-pixel] maximum texture size. It's unfortunate. I'm on 3dfx's advisory board, and they've certainly been aware of my positions for a long time. 3dfx does deserve a lot of credit, because you almost never see a delta like they had - where they were four times faster than their competition. It's just a little unfortunate to see them kind of slip off the lead. They kicked so much ass with the Voodoo 2, but right now you just can't call them the best accelerator any more. |
I hope that John Carmack's comments combined with the fact that TNT2-boards will be available extremely soon will finally open the eyes of everybody, to see that TNT2 beats Voodoo3 indeed.
