TivoToGo goes to MacOS X
Las Vegas (NV) - An announcement that non-Windows Tivo owners have been waiting for for years, Tivo has unveiled its TivoToGo software for the MacOS X platform, now enabling most computer owners to download and watch their recorded content while away from their TV.
Tivo has partnered with Roxio, a digital media management software company, to develop the software for Macintosh-based computers. Tivo was previously only available for PCs.
A basic version of the application is available as a free download for both Windows and Mac OS X owners. A premium version is also available for Windows, which allows transfers to specialized devices like the PSP, iPod, and mobile phones. The upgrade is priced at $24.95. However, for the Mac platform, users will need to buy Roxio’s "Toast 8 Titanium" to enable all the video transfer abilities. It retails for $100.
"Toast pioneered disc burning on the Mac, and Tivo revolutionized the way people watch TV, so we are thrilled to combine these strengths to provide new entertainment options for the Mac community," said Roxio product director Adam Fingerman.
The new announcement marks what is probably the biggest news for Tivo for the new year, following an eventful 2006 that included the debut of an HD-enabled Tivo, added presence of Tivocasts, and new advertising space in the Tivo Central interface.
