TI Adds Java to Its TCS2100 GPRS Chipset
In what the companies say is an effort to extend enhanced Java technology-based applications to every GPRS mobile phone or wireless personal digital assistant (PDA), Kada Systems and Texas Instruments just let us know that the Kada Mobile Platform will be integrated with TI's TCS2100 GPRS chipset. The partnership will let GPRS mobile device customers download and run Java 2, Micro Edition applications including games, mobile commerce, business-to-business applications, e-mail, and personal management software. The Kada Mobile Platform provides a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that supports Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) specifications, so that Java apps can run in size constrained environments. TI's Java technology-enabled TCS2100 GPRS chipset with the Kada Mobile Platform will be sampling in the second quarter of 2002, with planned availability in GPRS mobile devices and PDAs in the third quarter of 2002.
