IBM just let us know that is addressing three different markets with its freshly announced hard drives: desktop computers, mobiles, and blade servers. The Deskstar 120GXP is the 3.5" desktop offering and gives you a 120 gigabytes (GB) spinning at 7200 RPM. The Travelstar 60H, at 60 GB and 5400 RPM is a 2.5" notebook drive and the 40GN offers 40, 30, 20 and 10 GB capacities at 20 GB per disk and 4200 RPM. The new 2.5" Travelstar models targeted at blade servers are an "increased availability" version of the 60H and 40GN and are intended to increase available hard disk drive "power-on hours." They're said to offer users the ability leave the drive powered-on around-the-clock and provide a read/write or data access rate of up 50% for 24x7 blade server applications. All of the drives use IBM's antiferromagnetically-coupled (AFC) media (the company calls it "pixie-dust"), which Big Blue says leads to higher data stability and higher areal density. The Travelstar 60H and 40H mobile drives are shipping now, the Deskstar 120GXP will ship sometime this month, and the "enhanced availability" 60H and 40H drives should ship later on this quarter.
