Sony VPL-HS51: The Outsider

It's now recognized that Texas Instruments' DLP technology produces better results than LCD technology, both for contrast ratio and black density. This accounts for DLP projectors' historic edge in the Home Theater market, and up to now there hasn't been an LCD projector capable of reversing the trend. We've tested some models with better and better performance, such as the Sanyo PLVZ3 and the Hitachi PJTX 100, but despite all the efforts manufacturers have made, DLP has come out the winner hands down.

But here's a new model with performance claims that left more than one of us skeptical: A tri-LCD 1280 x 720 imager, a contrast ratio of 6000:1, an automatic iris adjustment system, 100% digital Real Color Processing, HDMI input, horizontal and vertical lens shift, a powerful zoom, quiet operation, etc. In short, a dream machine from a manufacturer with a worldwide reputation. And all at a launch price of $4,000, which has very quickly come down to $3,000 (for those who look hard enough, you can find it on sale for $2,600.
