The Right Software, Continued

While this is clearly not going to be an intuitive program, you'll need to practice to get the most out of it, but at the same time its capabilities are very extensive if you want to do your own music, whether from samples or from MIDI. A sample library is provided and you can import your own from sound files in the usual formats (Wave, MP3, etc.). Storm has synthesizers, sequencers and effects modules, which can give you some spectacular results. And, of course, there is a double deck you can scratch with. Note you'll need more than 500MB for the program and the samples on your hard drive.

A real music creation studio, Storm is much more than an ordinary mixer! Even though it has two virtual turntables...

OTS CD Scratch is specifically designed to work with CD Audio - it does not work with MP3 CDs or hard disk files. It works exactly like two turntables and a mixing console and that is what it looks like on screen. The principle is therefore very straightforward but very efficient, especially if your machine has two CD-ROM drives (recommended). You can also work with just one drive (mixing by playing two tracks on one CD at the same time), but it must be efficient otherwise you'll be heading for disaster. The advantage of this program is that it has a lot of sound processing modules: 2x10 band equalizer, gain control, compressor, limiter, etc., enough to get exactly the sound you want. It also does automatic mixing by sequencing tracks (from a single CD!) very effectively. However, the program switches to the restricted version (though still usable) after 30 days.

Two CD decks (shown as turntables!) and a little mixing console. The basic essentials for easy mixing.
