According to The Register, you might put off the purchase of that Pentium III just a few more months as prices on the 1GHz and 900MHz Mobile Pentium III will be cut as part of a "back to school refresh." Moreover, The Register is predicting continuing cuts in Pentium 4 processors and, by the end of the year, 2GHz desktops.
