The improved, distributed Internet

Computer scientist John Kubiatowicz and his team at the University of California at Berkeley are working on a new model of the Network that fits the world of absolute connectivity that is probably only a few years away. The effort has been funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, the agency that funded the original Internet, as well as IBM, EMC Corp. and the National Science Foundation.
Called OceanStore, it is an architecture that assumes data will be distributed randomly in many places around the Web with security provided on a file by file basis using strong encryption. The plan assumes, without much controversy, that storage prices will have dropped to near zero within the next ten years. It also intends to increase the reliability of both individual data as well as the entire Net by assuring that exists redundantly in multiple places.
