Maxtor Atlas 15K II

Maxtor doesn't quite exist anymore, as the company was purchased by Seagate Technology over a year ago. However, there are still several products on the market under the Maxtor brand, and the Atlas 15K II is one of them. There are 36 GB, 73 GB and 147 GB versions, and all of them rotate at 15,000 RPM. The drives carry 16 MB cache. We found the average access time to be pretty impressive: While all other 15,000 RPM drives required 5.6 ms to 6.6 ms for seeks (including rotational latency), the Atlas required only 5.5 ms. At a 97 MB/s maximum read transfer rate, its transfer rate is very respectable as well. Finally, it performed excellently in PCMark05's Windows XP Startup Performance benchmark, which requires both short access times and high transfer rates.
