Thailand planning to sue YouTube
Bangkok (Thailand) - The government of Thailand says it plans to sue YouTube over clips that it claims insult its king, in a situation that’s not exactly uncharted territory for the video sharing site.
Though now a rare law, in Thailand it is still illegal to insult the country’s royal figurehead. Recently, a man who vandalized pictures of Thai king Bhumibol Adulyadej was sentenced to 10 years in jail.
Thailand put a national ban on YouTube last month after the government noticed videos that defaced Adulyadej were deemed offensive. "We are considering taking legal action against the website," a spokesperson for Thailand was quoted as saying in an Agence France-Press (AFP) story.
A similar circumstance caused YouTube to be banned in Turkey for a few days earlier this year. The situation with King Adulyadej, who is the world’s longest-reigning king, may be the first such case to actually go to court.
