Thailand pulls out of YouTube lawsuit threat

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Bangkok (Thailand) - Thailand has said it no longer wants to sue Google because of an offensive video someone posted that insulted the country’s king.

The announcement from the Thai government that it planned to sue over the clip led to controversy from around the world. "We decided not to sue Google because it has agreed to cooperate in removing 12 video clips from the YouTube Web site," said a government official in an Associated Press story.

The king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, is the world’s longest-reigning monarch and one of few royalty still protected by archaic laws that make it illegal for people to cause "offense against the monarchy".

Leading up to the decision to drop the lawsuit, Google sent a letter to the Thai ministry, which read, "We have the deepest respect for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. e likewise respect Thailand’s law and tradition and hope that we will be able to reach a mutually acceptable resolution to the current controversy," according to the AP.
