Tech Consortium Forms Nonprofit for Long-Distance Wireless Push

by - source: Tom's Hardware

A consortium of technology giants has formed a new nonprofit corporation to promote long-distance broadband wireless access. Known as Wimax (World Interoperability for Microwave Access), the group of companies includes Nokia, Intel, Fujitsu, Airspan Networks, Inc., Alvarion Ltd., Aperto Networks, Ensemble Communications Inc., OFDM Forum, Wi-LAN Inc. and Proxim Corporation. WiMAX was launched to reduce the time it takes for wireless servers to offer services as well as the high cost involved in offering such services. WiMAX plans to test and certify the 802.16 wireless standard with the interoperability of broadband wireless access equipment. The 802.16 technology reportedly provides a range of up to 31 miles, without a direct line of sight to the wireless base station. The lightning fast shared data rates of 70 MB per second could provide T1 speed Internet connections for at least 60 businesses while simultaneously providing DSL Internet connectivity for hundreds of homes.

In addition to Wi-Fi connections and landline broadband access, 802.16 will offer a wireless extension to cable and DSL residential connections, especially in areas where there currently is no cable or telephone lines. 802.16 compliant equipment is expected to begin to ship in the mid-2004.
