AMD has hired the German company SuSE, one of the top four sellers of Linux, to develop the programming tools needed to utilize their forthcoming 64-bit chip. Intel has already taken a similar path, hiring VA Linux Systems to help bring Linux to its 64-bit Itanium. AMD's market has, thus far, been mostly among consumers but the combination of Linux and Sledgehammer could provide a point of entry into the business world for Advanced Micro Devices.
