Superbroadband DSL to hit Europe first
Symmetrical High-Density Digital Subscriber Line technology, offering speeds as fast as 4.6 megabits per second in both directions, will roll out in Europe this summer. Besides being fast, SHDSL trumps current high-speed, two-way DSL technology, SDSL, through interoperability with the existing network infrastructure. SHDSL reaches 20,000 feet from central-office switches and repeaters can extend that, according to a manufacturer, 19 miles farther. The technology is scheduled to begin appearing in North America in Q2 2002.
