Sun's AMD Pitch
A lot of sites are picking up on this story at Infoworld about Sun adopting AMD Athlon XP-Ms for its x86 server blades. However, while AMD fans rejoice at this confirmation of persistent rumors about the partnership, all is not joy:
Sun wanted the Sun Fire B1600 chassis, which holds up to 16 AMD or Sparc blades, to consume less than 1,000 watts. Each Athlon processor consumes between 30 watts and 40 watts; the UltraSparc IIi running at 650MHz consumes a maximum of 18 watts.
Will Sun favor its AMD over its SPARC? Hmmm. What other choice is there for Sun to rub Intel's nose it it, but AMD? Uhm, Transmeta and Via, but they don't raise Intel's hackles as much.
